Tuning for slow races

I was just reading a post from someone tuning a JD60 for slow races but can't find it now. I have a JD 70 that is used on a 61 ft. PTO auger at harvest & taken on July 1st each year to the slow races in our small town. My manifolds had blown apart like so many others so I built my own twin stacks & blanked off the exhaust passage on the intake.
It has always run real well at low RPM if carb. is tweaked just right ! Presently sitting in the shop it will run all day at 92 to 96 RPM & never miss a beat. Now I have to figure out something for stacks -- At present the pipes stop just at the corner of the hood & it's a bit LOUD------
 
The 70 is geared to high to be much a contender in a slow race..it is one of their faults..

It is geared higher than a lot but I've taken my class in town most years --we only have about 15 tractors yearly but I have beat the fellow with the 60 !!
 
The intake and exhaust manifolds from a LP fuel sixty stops
all that manifold nonsense on a sixty and uses standard exhaust pipe.
Sixty LP manifolds are two separate pieces; put them on both my sixty
and seventy from LP tractors respectively.

I was teasing fellers at a show about my 70D being slow & I that I was sure it would do well in a slow race.

They laughed at me so I started it up.

With the tractor in low gear I rolled out of my parking space with the diesel decompressed using the cranking engine at an idle motoring the diesel. Rrrrrrrrrr, hiss, hiss, Rrrrrrrrrr, hiss, hiss & on we went!

They assured me that was cheatin, disqualified me & made me park it!

Had fun though!

Used to do that with the old R to get people scratchin their heads back about 60 yrs. ago !! On the 70 I made plates to fit head from 1/2 plate & used mandrel bent 120's to make the offset--Took a while-----Take Care
