1946 D cylinder head questions

Hey guys. Tearing into my first two cylinder and have a few questions. I'm dropping the head off at the machine shop today for a valve job.

Where is a good source for the gaskets I will need?

I have read about lead washers being used on the head studs. There were no washers when I took mine apart. Should there have been?

How should I prep the head gasket when replacing it? Anything I should be applying to it?

I'm looking for a couple parts for the cooling fan. D396R friction disc and D3263R key, and D399R friction washer (2). I'm sure I could source the keyway locally if I cannot find one. The D396R spun on the shaft and wore down the key.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Stick with an original JD gasket. Tried an after-market set the at didn't have any metal on the outside of THE GASKET. failed after only a few hours, back to an original JD gasket, no problems.

Gaskets are available here on YT Tractors "tractor parts"

Check to verify that HEAD GASKET is METAL on both sides...next to head and next to Block:

Hey how's it going? I'm going to try to get this back together to go to Little Falls in May. You ever go to that show?

I found a friction disc at Martin parts & repair in Christiana, PA. Real nice guy to deal with.

Question on the lead washers. I have 9 head studs and the parts book says 18 washers are required. I'm assuming you place two on each stud?

I'm interested in the answers you shall receive pertaining to the LEAD WASHERS. I've always installed one Lead washer per stud(between Head and Nut).....not saying I'm correct......1939>1953 "D"

It has me wondering if the parts book is incorrect.
