Is there anyone around the Goldsboro nc area that works on old John deere tractors. I have a 1945 40 S that is running good at low speed and first and scound gear. But when you put it in 3rd and 4th it shuts off. Had card rebuilt new plugs and wires, distributor rebuilt and a new head. Time to find someone smarter then me to get it running right. Thanks for any help you have for me.

1945 model year JD 40S ? What is the serial number ?
Shuts off? It doesn't have enough power to move it's self without stalling in 3rd or 4th?
Try running it on one cylinder at a time by lifting one spark plug wire at a time .
Compression pressure ?

bet the load adjustment is set too lean on the carburetor.
Try opening the load needle on the bottom of the carb a couple of turns and see if it does the same thing.

Check your Fuel supply too. I once had a 430 that ran great in first and second gear but it would stall in higher gears. I later found a restriction in bottom of tank.

Double check what you have. 40's were not made until after the M series which started in 1947.

Sorry typo on my part 1954 40 s ser # 70097. When you put it in 3rd or 4th and move the throttle it slows down and cuts off. Gas seams to flow from the drain plug on bottom of card good.

Does it have a governer on it,sounds like things are a little backwards ?? Could be governer is stuck?? Just guessing??
