A freind of mine has two Bs, 1948 and 1949. I would like too get the 1949 BW, he said if I fixed the B he would give me the BW. Everything seems to be stuck, brakes, shift lever, clutch, and motor. What could I expect to pay for parts too get a tractor in this shape back in running condition? Or are they behond help? I'm thinking about $3500 apeice. What do you guys think?? Thanks in advance.
I would like to post a picture but don't if I can.

Your estimate of $ 3,500.00 each to repair them is about as good as anyone can guess. Bottom line is you will get more in them than they are worth. Those do look to be in good shape sheet metal wise. Not anywhere near as rusted up as an Ohio tractor would be sitting outside.

You are going to be on the losing end of that deal. If you want the BW offer him some cash and go. I have seen stuck Bs easily hit $3500 to get running. Heck mine was close to 6k when I was all said and done. You will need 4 tires if nothing else and that will be $1200+ for no names.

Actually, you would be better to go find a running one for $1200 and go from there.

Try and buy them both. Store them indoors and work on one at a time starting with the engine. Take your time. If nothing else both tractors have a great selection of parts ,,carbs and mags, cast centers etc that are certainly worth keeping. Hopefully they both have sn tags? Worth the venture if you ask me. Hate to see them scrapped. A second chance is what they need. Not making any more. Just go for it. You'll Learn a lot about how they are built.

If your goal is to make some money, forget it. If you'd like to bring something back to life, they might be neat projects.

How long have they been sitting??? I'm guessing with no exhaust covers engines are good and siezed, and will require disassembly. The brakes being siezed are common, and pretty easy to fix.

The shift lever being stuck has me concerned. I think I'd crack the trans filler plug, and see how much extra oil is in there. If a bunch runs out, it means that much water found its way in sitting, and you may be looking at tearing that apart, too.

They are nice and straight. That is a big plus.

You need to ask yourself, " why did someone just park these out in weather, uncovered , to rot? You think they even ran? Think if any chance of them warranting repair, they would just "scrap" them like that? They are now "donor tractors"...you may salvage the wide one but they are $ 400-$500 tractors at best. So you gonna "fix" his for $ 500? Offer him what you want for the wide and he takes it or walk.

I like what COurtland said - "Try and buy them both. Store them indoors and work on one at a time starting with the engine. "

Looks like a good supply of parts and if you want the Wide front "A" then work on it first. Get it free and running -even if you have to take parts from the other one! Carburetor wheels clutch brakes -all those extra parts are there!

I would like to get them both but you know how it goes, one mans trash is another mans
treasures. I guess the only way to find out how bad they are is to open them up. I can
emagine the heads bad, blocks beyond repair, roller bearings all rusted up, and gears
all pitted. The BW does have the B2406R rear end. Will wait untill the ground thaws
and see what I can do. Thanks for the comments. Bryan

The offer to get one running in exchange for the other is a non starter. You could sink 2-3 grand into getting the one running and another 2-3 into your "free" tractor which would mean that you would have 4 to 6+ grand into a BW that is worth far less than that.

How good of a friend is this guy? If he is a good friend, maybe the thing to do is both of you work together on getting them running.

He has offered to pay for parts on the B so it would be just the labor there. Thanks
for the comment. Bryan
