How to Widen Front End of Generation II

I have a 4250 2wd I need to widen the front end. It looks straight forward but I was wondering if anyone had any cool tricks to make it easier. I have been soaking joints in penetrating oil.

I am actually more concerned about the tie rods, likely they are stuck. Any tricks to that process?

The tie rods aren't much fun. I have had to heat them with a torch in the past... and I have also just bought some parts new to simplfy things.
 

I adjusted wheel spacing on several tractors when they were new or nearly new without any problems with stuck tie rods. I can imagine 30+ yrs of rust/dust could cause tie rods to be stuck. You could hold a hammer on one side of tie rod tube while hitting with hammer on other side to help loosen rust/dust along with applications of penetrating oil.
 
Yes, that helps... sometimes a pipe wrench to twist it helps get it to move, too. A lot depends on the tractor, and the climate it was in.

You may want to remove the whole assembly and work on it in a vise if it looks to be stubborn.
 
A portapower works good on the tierods if they are stuck. Was thinking I heard of a guy putting a 4X4 against the outer tierod and use the steering to spread the tierods also. chris
 
I ended up splitting the pipe part of mine with a cutting wheel on a grinder, then filled it with penetrating oil. Then welded the 1/16" slot up, after it was cleaned.
 
Paul , you should have made the characters you got it from do it.It does look nice.Seriously I just narrowed one up the other day and heat is your friend,hard on the paint but hammering is hard on the tie rods too.Maybe put some never seize on them if you ever move them again.Many tractors are never had the wheels moved since new.
 
I have used a good Hard wood 2X4 the correct length and wedge it between the steer arm and the side frame,,putting some steering pressure on it,,along with a little hammer action like Jim described..
 
I had to take mine off the 4840 to a guy with a big press. He unscrewed the tie-rod ends & pressed the through the hole. It took a surprising amount of press.

My 4430s came apart with no issues.
