4430 Hyd Leak #2

This is the second hydraulic fluid leak. The fluid seems to becoming from below the rockshaft housing. When the tractor is warm it runs in a steady flow. I attached two pictures.

I looked at the JD parts diagram and it appears there is a large gasket beneath the housing. How difficult would it be to replace this? Any other suggestions about doing this repair?

Thanks!
Rich

Tx Jim-

Thanks for your comment and parts diagram. Unfortunately I do not know very much about
these.

I see the rockshaft valve o-ring in the diagram, but don't know where those parts go in
relation to the housing (not clear to me from the diagram)...otherwise I do not know
where the rockshaft valve is. Is it accessed from the side? or from beneath?

Thanks!
Rich

I'm with Tx Jim. I'm betting is the o-ring #25 if it is a steady stream. The gasket only seals for hydraulic fluid in the transmission case that is sloshed around or return fluid. It doesn't seal for fluid under pressure if it is like a 4020.

If that is it you will have to pull the rockshaft valve. Haven't pulled one on a 4430 but I would think you could do this without removing the cab. Might have to jack it up a little. Others with more experience will know.

They aren't too bad to do, I did one last summer leaking like that.

23 and 33 are the pipes that the o-rings go on, you'll have to remove number 18 off the top cover, it will come out without messing with the cab or platform. Take the selective control valve off first to make it easier to get to bolts and lighter, the bolts on the left side are a pain, but doable, clean the dirt out of there first so you don't drop in the trans case. Unhook the linkage and tie the, out of the way replace all the o-rings on 23 and 33, 23 is high pressure oil coming in and 33 goes to the hitch, 23 is sometimes a source of a high pressure leak to sump.

I was in a pinch and had to make the gasket out of gasket material, the one that was there was farmer made out of card board and when the rockshaft o-ring was leaking it was running right through the gasket. After I fixed it the rockshaft would stay up for days, don't forget to lower the hitch, it will make a big mess if you don't.

Thanks Tx Jim!

Very helpful, I will have to go back and look at the tractor and review the parts diagrams
some more and hopefully it will start to make some sense.

Thanks!
Rich

Thanks MikeJM!

A lot of good information. Were you able to lift it off without a hoist? Also, will I see 23
and 33 and associated o-rings on the bottom of the housing?

Dug out my service manuals and need to do some reading:)

Thanks Again!
Rich

Rockshaft valve housing(key 18) in my posted photo of parts schematics can be removed without a crane. Yes you should see o-rings/backup washers after housing has been removed.
