John deere 2140 pto

I have a john deere 2140 that has a 540 pto shaft that spins to fast. Is there a shifter some were that I am not seeing that will return it to 540. It seems to bespinning like a 1000 shaft would.

Does it have 2 stub shafts, one for 1000, one for 540? I don't think you can put the
540 shaft in and have it turn 1000 rpm. Check shaft rpm with engine at 2200 or so,
should be close to 540. Ben

The shaft has 6 splines. It is a normal 540
shaft. The tractor is a European model I
don't know if that makes a difference. I
just need to get the 540 shaft to spin at
its normal rate.

What's your tractors serial number? There appears to be a pto speed change collar(key 18) offered on later serial number tractors.

The tractor has a cab and there is a place inside the cab were it looks like the speed selector should be expected that there is a plate screwed fast to the cab floor. Do you know were the linkage would run and were it would concect to the tractor?

My knowledge of JD tractors such as yours that were built for European sales is very limited. Syncro trans is the one that is supposed to have the dual pto speed change linkage. My guess from viewing parts schematics is shifter shaft should be on RH side of differential housing in hole outlined in red where bushing?(key 12) goes..

The only pto shifter is to disengage the pto.
(not to be confused with the clutch)
Pto speed is determined by which stub shaft is
in the tractor.
Use a hand held tach if you think the speed is
too fast.

Here is a picture of the pto housing. If I am looking at it right the speed selector should be on the top right of the housing. There is a plug where it should be. Am I missing something?

some of the European models had 1000 rpm pto using what looked like a 540 shaft. Have run into it on 2 4240S models,on those I just changed the stub shaft to one for a US model 4240, hopefully you can do the same

Mabey I will have to try that. I was running out of ideas and could not find a speed selector. I have not heard of anything like this before. Thanks.

I agree plug outlined in blue circle is where 540/1000 rpm selector shaft should be located. Are you 100% sure 6 spline pto shaft is turning a lot faster than 540 rpm's???

I do not have anything to measure the speed of the pto other than hooking up a piece of equipment and watch it vicously spin. Unfortunately this cost me when I hooked up my discbine for the first time and when I started it up and got the tractor up to speeed. It seemed to spin be spinning really fast and within seconds the first gearbox on my discbine flew into pieces. Now anything that gets hooked up to this tractor gets run almost an a ideal. This spins equipment at about were they should be.

I know this might be odd but I would pull the PTO shaft out and check that it is not made to run as a 1000 PTO shaft on the internal side of the shaft. 540 and 1000 are differant lenghs internally. And has this shaft in the tractor run at 540 PTO speed and all of sudden started running to fast.

I just bought this tractor so I don't know much of its history. It has always spun this fast for me.

Hopefully this week I can pull the pto and check the internal splines and mabey get some answers.

Was this tractor brought over to the US by a European farmer ? We have Dutch and Germans around here that sold thier European property, buy land here and being all thier European equipmment with them. Not unusual to follow a European spec tractor doing 38MPH down the highway here .

b&d..... There are jockeys in the US that import
European tractors. I know one in MS and I think
there are some in PA and one of the Carolinas
