How much value of a JD 1964 4020 is lost with no serial number tag ?? Does it matter if it's a diesel or a power shift ?? I know myself the serial number means very much even if you keep it yourself forever.

Myself, I would look at it about the same as a car with missing ID tags: stolen?, salvaged?, flood damaged?, burnt?, assembled from two different tractors?

Dave 53 years is a long time. Some tractors have amazing stories that you will never know.In that the powershift number will probably never be answered and you know it is a 64 about all the serial number would tell is when and where it was shipped. We know its not the first one[supposedly in Missouri]and its one of 169,178 total.I bought a 71 4000 in Michigan last week that was really nice and sold it on order before it got here on approval and it was actually a 72 so it actually had more value to some but was sold anyway.I was at a friends house and he had a well used dairy 2520D which I walked by and he thought it was pretty funny I wasn't interested in the serial number 17000 which was first one and brought $40K+ at Gathering of the Green to W.Keller.I also have heard stories of rare high dollar tractors that started with a serial number only.I have people call asking for cetain serial numbers hoping it might be a family tractor but the main thing to me is year.4020 and 4000 over 270000 are in demand as there are 288 possibilies if all numbers were used.I have actually only seen 2.

The first 4020 is in a collection and the last one is still at the Deere factory so to me there would be little loss with no tag. Sometimes I wish old tractors could talk and tell us their history. Most early 4020's are going to be work tractors and not go into a collection. If you know it is a 64 go to a salvage yard and get a tag in that serial number range if it helps you sleep better. If you ever sell it just tell the buyer what you did. But if you want to sell it for about half of it's valve call me and I will come get it.lol Tom

Well yes then you are probably out of luck, especially if it was switched from a different type of tractor. Back in the old days on Dubuque two cylinders you had to tell them what type it is (RC, U, S etc.) and what fuel type. If that doesn't check out they likely wouldn't issue a new number.
