Removing Serial Plate from a 1010 Block

I performed an engine swap on my 1010. The original engine was completely shot and part of the block broke off when I took it apart. I'd like to take the serial tag off the original block and put it on my new engine. Original engine was from an RS, new from an RU. Any suggestions on how to do that without breaking the aluminum tag?

Those are usually drive type rivets. Really hard steel. JD may still even sell them. Try a dremal and cut a slot in the rivet head and try to unscrew them. I had removed some in the past with a small sharp chisel and try to get them to lift up enough to them grab with vise grips and twist out. Some the tags got buggered others not so bad. I'd try the slotting trick I read about here first though. P. S. I was removing them from main cases of parted out tractors before I hauled them in for scrap.

Those tags were of the machine serial number but Deere put them on the block. Just like an 8N Ford. Once the engine is switched all original vin info is now gone.

They are "drive screws" and the are darned hard steel. As has been said, if you can make a nice slot in the head the head with a Dremel tool with a cutoff wheel they will usually back out in the normal direction you would turn a screw to loosen it.

New ones are some 40 cents each from DEERE, part #37H44.

I have to remove name plates from injection pumps on a daily basis..
I use a flat thin putty knife to get under the tag and give it a few light taps w/ a hammer,
NOW go to the other side of the tag & do the same thing, that will loosen the rivet enough to
either grab it or just wiggle the tag up..
If you not worried about reusing the rivet, just smack the rivet hard enough to cut thru it..
Just walk around it, underneath the tag..
JD sells those tags and would probably punch out the info too..
