JD 4020 Early Model PTO Clutch

Early model 4020 PTO--hooked my 8' tiller behind tractor today, when put into dirt PTO clutch was slipping, had not had a problem with it before. During hay season last year I got into a bind with baler a few times but nothing I thought to be too much. The PTO clutch did slip I could smell it. I thought nothing of it and continued going. But today when trying to use tiller the PTO clutch went to smoking and slipping. Is there any adjustment, how do you adjust it.

Dumb question:
There is probably a slip clutch in the drive line of the tiller, to protect the tiller and the tractor, could that be what is slipping and burning? The tiller clutch should be much less expensive to fix than the tractor PTO clutch.

If caught right away you can sometimes adjust the linkage in the dash to go over center more but it sounds like you will be splitting the tractor for a clutch replacement. Replace all the springs and make sure that none of the discs are warped. Usually you need a rear engine seal as well. I usually replace the three pins in the flywheel and both throwout bearings and the pilot bearing. Several companies make a kit with everything in including the pilot shaft and clutch adjusting tool. Not a bad job especially if you have the Deere service manual to help you. We can split a 4020 in a little over an hours time. Tom
