J D 40 All Fuel

I have a JD 40S All Fuel I would like to know if there is any difference in the All Fuel engine and is there a different carburetor or just different jets mine has a TSX 245 Also it list a different manifold for the All Fuel What is the difference and will a gas manifold work
Is there any information that will tell how many all fuel 40S were manufactured

Thank You

According to SM-2024 the TSX-245 was a gas carb used on M's and 320/330's. TSX-530 was used on gas 40's and TSX-562 on all-fuel 40's. I would think the only difference in manifolds would be the all-fuel manifold would have a pre-heat area around the exhaust runner to preheat the "all-fuel" fuel being used.
According to Mr. Thinker there were 653 all-fuel model 40S built.

I am planning on using gasoline only. Would a TSX 245 and a gas manifold work ok. I need to replace the manifold due to a small hole and was wondering if a gas would fit. I had the carburetor rebuilt by Yesterday's Tractor and it runs best if the idle jet is all the way in could the wrong carburetor be the problem

You seem to be looking for some kind of guarantee that the gas manifold will fit in place of an all-fuel manifold. All I can say is I would think that it would fit. Try a gas one and find out. There are a heck of a lot more gas manifolds than all-fuel manifolds.

You said "Also it list a different manifold.......". Does this mean you have a 40 parts catalog? If yes, look to see if there are different blocks, cranks, rods, heads, or valves for all-fuels and gas engines. This will answer your question- "I would like to know if there is any difference in the All Fuel engine."

I'm not familiar with TSX carbs but if it runs best with the idle jet all the way in I think you have an internal carb problem and not a problem with the "wrong" carb. Call whoever rebuilt your carb and talk to him about the idle jet situation.

The only parts that are different seem to be the carburetor jets the head and manifold. It list a head for high altitude gasoline also. Would the difference be in the compression I still don't know if a gasoline manifold will work on a "all fuel" head and if a TSX 245 carburetor will work properly on the "all fuel" engine

A "good" TSX 245 will run right on either an all-fuel or straight gas manifold. Call the guy who rebuilt your carb. Something's wrong with it. I've run out of answers to your questions.

all fuel carbs have bigger jetting for the distillate....also I'm not exactly sure of the 40's but the others had a by pass passage to prevent a shut down while running on distillate as this would foul the plugs....I'm also aware of the difference in manifolds and there may be a head or piston difference....I'm sure the parts catalogue would show this....as I recall the all fuel ran a lower compression ratio due to the heavier fuels....also as I remember in using the old B it had a longer lugging period on the rpm range...they were an economical setup in their day....would start on gas shift over to distillate and then back to gas to clean up the plugs....great ideal....some people ran on a combination of gas/kerosene and diesel fuel....
