4030 4230 Question

Can I marry a front end of a 4030 to a 4230 quad transmission. My 4030 has a good engine, with a bad Quad. I found a 4230 with a bad engine, but a great quad transmission. Is it doable?

Thanks
Jeff

Admittedly I paint with a pretty broad brush, but what you're entertaining should be quite doable. However, I seem to recall that some of the 4030's had the 6-359 Engine in them instead of a Waterloo 400 series engines. If that's the situation, it would be a little tougher, but still doable.

Now you've got me wondering if it was that the 4030 switched back and maybe even forth from the Saran 6-359 Diesel engine to the Dubuque 6-329 Diesel and the Waterloo 6-404 Diesel was never in the 4030. If that's the case, sure the proposed change-over would be pretty tough!

Block deck height was higher on the Dubuque long strokes. Camshaft location was different from Saran's too. Mannheim didn't make engines. Tractor factory there mainly used Saran, France engines.

4030 never had Waterloo eng.
They were only 329.
European 4040 had 359T.

Please explain different camshaft location on Saran engines vs Dubuque engines.

Still in the block of course, just in a little different location for some reason - probably having to do with existing tooling - a little higher up in the block as I recall, but 100% not sure.

I have never tried it, but the clutch housing gasket is different

Yes they are, but it is because the 4230 has the 2 bolts higher behind the motor, that the 4030 does not use. It does not mean that it would not work.
The 4030 has same clutch housing bolt pattern than the waterloo tractors. The difference in clutch housing is due to the 4030 having a smaller transmission size (3020 size) than the 4230 (4020 size). The 4050 all had same clutch housing with 2 different motors. The 4050s with small motors are using a specific engine back plate that can grab the 2 top bolts on the transmission.

The 300 series engines are made with a bolt on flywheel plate, which allow them to fit either the 4 main bolts bell housing of the Dubuque-Manneihm 1020-2840, or the Waterloo bell housing. The 4030-4040-4050, all have that precious "conversion" plate + special hydraulic pump support, that needs to be used when someone converts a weak 3020 diesel into a good tractor using a 239 turbo.

I cannot see issue either with the transmission shafts, the 4050 having same shafts for both motors, and same flyweehls than 4030, with same adapters pressed in the flywheels for transmission pump driveshaft.

The motor and clutch housing would seal fine without the 2 top bolts from the pictures I have on my computer. I would not worry about getting a 4050 back plate to get those 2 extra bolts, except if you have a big loader on it and want to have a stronger connection from motor back plate to clutch housing than what your 4030 had.
