Identify this JD H attachment

A friend of mine says this part pictured came with his John
Deere H. He has since painted and re-sold the H. What is this
part for?

Part of the cultivator lift arm, but it's been modified for some other use. A John Deere H with properly adjusted hand lift cultivators was a dream to run. Easily the best two row cultivating tractor I ever used and I've run a bunch of them.

Aw Paul, I've cultivated with a John Deere H (my own '45) and among several other rigs I've run,. a Farmall Super C (my great uncle's new 1951 model) and I gotta say I honestly think the C powered outfit was better.....not a lot better, but some better because it had hydraulic lift and power enough to push the rig faster when the corn got big enough to " throw dirt". Everything else was pretty even, how the rig handled, job it was capable of doing, and operator seating and comfort. My H set up was hand operated, but not a big issue after you learned a method to raise and lower the cultivator gangs while turning around at the row ends. All in all though, the C was much easier with the little lever on the quadrant right below the steering wheel to push and pull with one finger and your thumb.
I gotta admit though in it's time (1939-1946). the little John Deere H with it's 2 row cultivator had to have been one of the best, and a B John Deere was pretty nice too at that time.
