JD 50 Crankshaft seal?

Another dumb question for the JD guys -

I have the two seals required for the right main bearing housing, and now I'm wondering how they should be oriented. In reading the IT manual, it mentions "opposing seals". Another place mentions "back to back" seals. The manual says the two seals are to prevent engine oil/first reduction cover oil from mixing. So, I was gonna put the inner seal in with the garter spring facing the main bearing, and the outer seal in with the garter spring facing the clutch pulley. But then in another place it mentions leaving the inner seal out 1/16" to prevent blocking the engine oil drain hole under the main bearing. So that statement makes me wonder if the first garter spring goes out and the second one goes in. It would be impossible to block the drain hole with the first garter spring facing in.

How do you guys install them?

I do have the official JD Service manual, but it doesn't appear to address this, probably because they knew that a real mechanic would already know the answer, ha.

I try to watch how things come apart, but there was only one seal in this location, with the garter facing in, when I took it apart.

Thanks again for all of the advice.

I install them the way you planned with the inner one sealing oil in and the outer one sealing gear oil out. If you install the inner one slightly past the lip of the bore and then put the outer one in and let it push the inner seal to it's final placement you will be fine. The outer seal goes in till it's flush with the bore surface.

Seals are oriented that increased pressure forces the seal tighter around the shaft.
Make certain that nothing blocks the oil ports.
