JD 2650/ 2755 High Low Shift

I have a JD 2650 (mostly the same as 2755...) the high low shift only works when hyd oil is cool/ cold. I understand that it is probably the clutches in the high low..?
I have to replace the clutch so I'm planning on fixing the High Low at the same time.
I have done a few IH 56, 66 and 86. But no JDs Maybe a 3130/ 2840 bout 30+ years ago...
My questions..
1) Where is it, I presume it is behind the transmission.
2) It has a cab, i have changed clutches a few time and you dont have to remove the cab. just unbolt the front, remove the right front cab support and the 6 bolts and out she come.. so can I leave the cab on?? Looks like can, just have to jack it up and block up (safety first)
3) Anyone out there fixed a High Low? Or is this a JD specialty item?
Thanks for all the help!!

You are loosing transmission pressure when it warms up, the pump is probably worn, and possibly cracked pump pipes, The low side is spring loaded "on" when you shift to high you are overcoming the low spring pressure and at that point pressure oil is engaging the high clutch, there are sealing rings that wear and the housing the rings run in wear also, and yes the cab needs to come of,, be sure you have it all right the first time..Every one on here knows I don't like them,, but I do know how to fix them,, it's Kinda like stepping on a nail to me,, I know what happens,,and I don't want it to happen again...but sooner or latter it will...Darn it..Several others on here are good at them so we will help all that we can...

tim s THANKS..
Worn pump? You talking about the main pump? Dont think so, it has a loader and dont see any loss in performance. One time cutting hay, it was left in high and the hyd oil got supper hot, put i low and cooled right down..
I will have to get it out and see what your talking about (do you work on them for others..?)
Cab off.. that sucks..is it in the second housing back?
Thanks again...

Front high pressure closed centre pump can't do anything unless it is supplied with oil from the low pressure open centre pump inside the transmission case.
Oil pump in transmission supplies transmission lube oil, pto clutch, pto brake , high/low clutch pack and any oil left over supplies the front pump.
Plugged screens, plugged filter, broken oil lines, jammed valves , worn pump, worn servo seals or an incorrectly connected loader will deteriorate the hydraulic system performance.

Its always best to "test not guess". The operating pressure for the hi/low is in the 165psi. area and can be checked at a port on the shift cover. If it is ok then check the lube pressure. I do this at the top of the tank above the front pump. You will need to make up an adapter to thread into the tank. Lube pressure is typically as low as 5psi., 10psi is more common. Thething to watch is the drop in lube pressure when shifting from hi to low or vica versa. If you have 10psi lube in low and 5psi lube in hi you have a leak in the hi circuit.
As far as access/repair, everyone has their own way but I leave the cab, split between the clutch housing and transmission, rolling the transmission/diff housing etc out from under the cab. The transmission pump with the hi/low in front of it, remains in the clutch housing.

Well I messed up, I forgot to tell my dad not to work on the tractor and its split, thought I left enough together that he wont want to work on it but. So any suggestion on what can I do now? Sounds like could be orings or hose or pipe bad

I suppose you could look for transmission pipes with splits or holes. Divert valve or the relief valve jammed with an errant peice of rubber gasket. Could not hurt to install a new trans pump. I wish some jobber would custom build new pumps with double the factory capacity .
Could be time to scold your Father for parts swapping and hoping instead of trouble shooting and repairing.

OK, I need a new clutch slave cylinder release bearing... Which aftermarket have you guys use and had success (I know OEM is best... in most cases) I dont like the a&i products, I have had some returns... I have used the LUK brand products..
Anyone use the ones they have on this site? It's the cheapest I have seen...

I have a button clutch and the flywheel is in need of turning, pressure plate facing is good. The tractor has a loader. I have been reading blogs and some say it is better to get a full disc clutch... What do yall think?

So finally getting back to the tractor, had a lot of life happen...
Alway,

Got it apart and it was the transmission pump (Gear Pump). The transmission has been thru before we purchased it and the outer pump ring was changed with a non-heat treated steel.... thought I have a pic of the gap but it was about .1" see the one pic. also have some pics of the plates..
The fun started finding a gear set, my tractor was early series and JD used on with two clogs, then later used spline, well they don manu the clog ones, aftermarket folks in Europe do but most are trash like the one put in my tractor. So I went the used and found a good one from a place in Canada, see pic.

So with all that said, now I'm planning to go back together next weekend. Anything special I need to do to prime the pump?
anythings else.

thanks again for all your help!!
