John Deere H rings

I just put new rings in my H and I am having trouble with it burning oil whenever I run it over about 2/3 - 3/4 throttle. Absolutely no smoke below that. It only has around 2 hours or so run time so far. I measured everything and it was pretty well in tolerance. I have rebuilt several engines and never encountered this problem. I did however hone the cylinders a little on the rough side because i have no way to work it. I thought it may help with breaking in.Any suggestions?.

Couple of questions. What oil are you using? Oil level not too high? Have you done anything to really make it work up a sweat and seat the rings?

Actually the tractor is new to my collection. The oil pressure gauge was pegged so I turned it down so it runs between the M and H. It seems better almost immediately. Now maybe 3 or 4 hours on the rings. I have no way to work it until the weather gets better. Do you think the high oil pressure would cause high oil cumsuption? I have sae 30 oil in it.

as long as the rings are installed correctly and the end gap in spec. then it needs to be worked hard at operating temperature to drive the rings into the walls to seat them. running it cold will glaze the cyl's and cause oil burning. giving it a few sniffs of bon-amy can help.

I'd lower the oil pressure some more down to about 13 lbs. Too much pressure will cause the oil to bypass the rings. The rings are not seated yet. Did U check to see if the bore in both cylinders is round. Those horizontal cylinders seem to wear more vertically because of the weight of the piston on the bottom of the bore. If the bore is out of round the rings will never seat.

Sounds like you got it figured out.
Too much pressure would sling a lot more oil to the cylinders.
When you get a chance to work it hard, that should help.

How does too much oil pressure push oil past the rings? Too much oil pressure and flow can push oil past the oil slingers on the crank.

My engine guy says people always put new rings in and worry about the ring to cylinder fit. If the piston is old and worn the rings won't seal against the piston and then oil goes between the ring and piston.

For some reason H pistons don't seem to have a groove wear problem.
I've removed several sets and never seen one with worn grooves.
Several were stuck and had to be broken loose in a press. There is
even an extra groove that is supposed to collect carbon.
Those blocks were badly pitted but the pistons would clean up
with no pits or scoring. The rings will be stuck with carbon
build up. The only wear is pin holes get egg shaped on 75% or more.
I have to fit them to .005 oversized pins but the old bushings will
usually clean up at .005 also.
I haven't checked lately but Deere's OS pins went off the marked at
over $100 each while std were about $53. Again, I haven't checked
lately.

Lowering the oil pressure and a little more run time have pretty well fixed it.....I hope. Oil level was a little high. The cylinders were about .004 oversize bd and the pistons were still within new size. The ring grooves where good. Hard to believe. I am a machinist and if I wasn't I would certainly question that. I am using Detergent SAE 30 oil. This is a play tractor and not out to work all day. If I was to guess the oil pressure was at least 30 psi. It may have been overwhelming the rings with oil. I imagine the volume of oil is tremendously increased with the doubling of the pressure. What confused me is why it only pumped oil at nearly wide open and no smoke at all up to about 3/4 throttle then like turning on a switch it would lay out the smoke. I have heard about the rings chattering if the hone angle or finish is too coarse. Anyone else ever heard of that? Seems that it could happen and would explain why it would happen at a certain RPM.

Thanks for all of the help. I always enjoy the conversation here.
