'44 JD A Axle Seals

Hey everybody,

I'm in the process of tearing down my '44 A (S/N 534789) for a rebuild, so I figure now is as good a time as any to replace my axle seals.
Chances are I'm going to mangle the felt retainers on removing the axles which brings me to my question. The '44 (S/N 534789) has the A264R retainers in it now, but can I replace them with a new set of inner
and outer retainers from S/N 547322+?
I have a '47 A in the field we've been using for parts and I think the inner retainers should come off in one piece.

Are those the ones with screws holding them in ? Should be fine if you remove the screws BEFORE trying to get the axles out. I do not think the other type will interchange.

Mine are just pressed onto the end of the axle, no screws.
According to the parts catalogue, the axles never changed from 488000-583999, so what if I swap out all of the bearings, spacers and retainers?
And is it possible to just press the axles out with the retainer still stuck to the axle, to avoid damaging it?

Okay perfect. I've seen so many posts about others pulling the retainer beforehand and I just couldn't understand why you would do that.
Reusing the retainer shouldn't be an issue if it's not damaged, right?

I have reused several of them, but I do like to use new felts If you can still get them. The pressed in type usually pop out fine as you remove the axle.
