Having trouble identifying this item, found in some old parts in shed today, the shaft has a piece of paper attached to it saying "174173 john deere 50", the box it was in says "a4380r", but I don't think that is right

NOT sure what it is, but it appears to me someone stuck it in the wrong box.

A4340R is the pinion shaft for the adjustable tread-width wheels on quite a few tractors, and is quite different in appearance, but probably about the same length (Fits in the box).

I can't, offhand, think of where the part you have may be used in a "50", but I have linked the "50" parts catalog below (in .pdf format) for you to peruse and see what you can find.
50 parts

That is a shaft the brake pedal hooks to the splined end and the part to spread the brake shoes goes into the hole on the other end. Many 2 cyl. use this same part. I do not have my parts books handy to tell which models.

I had to think hard on this on as I have used them been for. It is the brake lever pinion shaft. The brake peddle bolts to the end with the tappered spline and there is a cam that operated the brake pad inside the drum.

JD part number B3004R

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the [b:654c4848f0]lever shaft[/b:654c4848f0] (Key 15) A 4302 R.

Even though it does not match the part number in your second photo, it does look exactly like the lever shaft in your first photo.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]Bob[/b:654c4848f0] that "[i:654c4848f0]it appears to me someone stuck it in the wrong box.[/i:654c4848f0]"

Also agree with others on its function.

Take a look at the photos below of the lever shaft on "1011" one of our 1953 Model 70s.
