1520 engine question part 2

I pulled the head off and the middle piston liner [number 2] appeared a wee bit higher than the others. Before I pulled the liner the young man that helps me on Saturdays spotted what appears to be a small hairline crack on the sides between both number 1 and number 3 cylinders. When I pulled the liners the hairline crack goes on down a half inch or so. The only thing I can figure out I did wrong was not have the bolts and washers to hold liners in place that J D Seller mentioned in my earlier post. Sure wish I had known that before! Anyway, can I have this block repaired and use it or do I need to start searching for another block? The machine shop I took it to before[Coranets in Somerset ,Ky] is well known for repairing blocks. I will take it there even though it is about 100 miles away. Thanks for any help/advice Lee

Are you talking about the block being cracked
between the cylinders? You might be able to get
by if they're not wide. I have seen them run before
but you need to determine why the cylinders didn't
seat properly.
Red's can probably repair the block but you might
try to locate one. Does yours have much cavitation
in the sealing area?

I would look for a used block before I would try and repair the one you have. The JD 1520s did not have many engine troubles so there should be blocks around and they should be reasonable. You will need the casting number as there were two blocks used on the JD 1520.

It is hard to know for sure how bad your cracked block is without seeing it. I have seen many cracked between the cylinders over the years. I personally never tried to repair one cracked there. I usually just found a good used one.
