I just bought a John deer tractor and I'm needing to find a serial number I think it's a M but not sure of course it doesn't have the tag under the switch on the dash it does have up on front of the frame right behind the front tires has John Deere m64 stamped on it

Sure looks like a 40, not an M nor MT, but could it also be a 420 or 430, with much of the evidence of that having been painted over? Notice it has Roll-O-Matic, which was pretty rare on a Dubuque-made tractor. Was that option available on the 40?
I'd be a little wary of one where the model tag, below the steering wheel, below the switch is missing. The serial number is also on that tag.

This tractor in photo is definitely not a 430. According to 40,420-430 parts catalogs roll-o-matic frt axles wasn't listed. Roll-o-matic frt axle could be from a 1010

You are right about the front end... it is from a 1010. I think the tractor is a 40T, or possibly a 420T. Details of the engine and block (an engine serial # would help) should tell the rest of the story.

guy I bought it from said it was a 410 but I pretty sure that's wrong I will get the engine number shortly

Agree with others that your tractor is a <a href="https://youtu.be/ufkD9Do7Gf8?list=PLCUEeGboEbi-pR6w2onO-9zclH9sBoDVu">Model 40T</a>.

Take a look at the parts description below.

below the starter behind the engine it has stamped M1782T and I took battery box off to take gas tank off to patch a small leak there is a number stamped between the battery box and the dash M-1787T I believe also on the bracket that is behind the manifold that bolts on to the piece that the top radiator hose hooks to is stamped m1061T u not sure where to look for engine number

A 40 Tricycle or a 1956 420 .
Serial number plate should be on the left side of the bel housing.
Water pump or thermosyphon cooling.
Then again it's anyone's guess what has been mixed, matched and bolted together since 1953.
