bent oil filter body revisited

The mating surface of the oil filter body, where the filter head attaches, was distorted. I failed to take a "before" picture, but I'm happy with the "after" pictures. It was really easy to straighten, using two circular plates and a 3/4 piece of all thread.

Thanks Mike M for your comments on this and many other repairs.

Make sure the rubber packing where the cap seals is all removed and use a NEW one at every filter change. Most times it is all hard as a rock and needs chiseled out. I ground an old screw driver just for this job.
Since your case is empty and needs cleaned out anyway I'd wrap some 80 grit sandpaper around a file and run it across the top of that can it will really clean it up and show any high and low spots you can tweek.

Good idea Mike - I'll dress that top for high spots.

We're the third owner of this tractor, and we've had it for 40 years, so it's highly likely that I'm the guy that overtightened the filter cap at some time. This wouldn't be the first time I've destroyed something by overtightening it.

I always use a new rubber, but I'm gonna check closer to see if there is an old one stuck in the groove.

Thanks again for all of your good advice.

I have to do the same repair on my H. Never had a problem overtightening but when I drove it out of the case with a piece of hardwood I pushed the end outward. Couldn't find any kind of drive that would stay on the outer edge of the can and didn't think it would come out that hard.

I worried about knocking it loose from the case if I tapped upward on it, but I was gonna try that next if the bolt/washers failed to work. Pressing it back in proper alignment seems tricky. Then as I was tightening the nut on the all thread it dawned on me that I could spin it and cause the very problem that I was trying to avoid. This one is stuck in there pretty tight, as it didn't move any.

I have to wonder why you tried to remove it ? Or was it also previously damaged ? I have had to replace several of these cans in H models for some odd reason.

I tore the whole thing apart for rebuild/restore years ago. Lots of junk in the crankcase so I thought I could clean it out better with the can out. It's still in pieces.
