A carburator

1952 john deere A i need to know the settings for the carburetor. it breaks up under a load after a bout 5 seconds like its starving for gas. I'm thinking its a restriction that's not allowing it to get enough fuel under a load. at an idle I could pull the full length of the track. but if you throttle it up after a bout 5 or 6 seconds it starts to break up terribly. throttle it back and it clears up and runs fine. any suggestions?

Did the miss just begin out of the clear or was the carburetor removed then reinstalled or removed rebuilt then reinstalled.

the petcock was not closing all the way allowing gas to bypass the carb and end up in the oil. and I replaced the sediment bowl. and after that I started having problems, but not all at once. and at the pull I tried opening the load valve and it helped but did not solve the problem. was gonna try and go thru the carb again. and was wandering about the needle valve settings.

Some quick flow checks. Remove the gas line and let it flow into a coffee can. From the time the shutoff valve is turned on then turned off 30 sec later and gas stops flowing, there should be approximately 1-1/4" of gas. Second check, put the can under the carburetor, open the bowl valve, 30 seconds later there should be 1/4" of gas in the can. With carburetor installed on tractor, hook up a clear tube, then turn on the gas, the level in the tube should be about 3/4" below the parting line. The carburetor needs these flows and level before other carburetor troubleshooting can be effective.

Don't assume that a "new" sediment bowl is a "correct" sediment bowl. If it did NOT do this until you changed it then I guess I would be comparing it to the old one as far as inlet/outlet dia etc. Also screen fine-ness. If you do the flow test below it should prove this out.

Danny,

Could be an ignition skip causing it to break down also and be coincidental to you changing the fuel bowl. Put a couple of plugs in her if you've checked all the possible fuel issues. If that doesn't help put in points and condenser. I've had them sound like their starving for fuel an it turned out be an ignition break down. Good Luck!
John

Planning on doing the fuel flow tomorrow, and I. can't remember the last time I changed the points. All good stuff, thanks all. Rain will be moving in. Will be spending some time in the shop

(quoted from post at 17:37:41 01/18/17) I don't understand the clear tube and level of parting line?

Judging from the pictures provided, what Forty40 is talking about is checking the float adjustment. When he refers to the parting line I believe he is talking about where the bowl meets the carb body.

Kind of sounds like what happens with the ebgine Air Inlet Pipe when Mud Dauber Nests drop inside, to the Dog-Leg and chokes the air inlet...But, it

would be Smoking Badly when the throttle is opened with a load on the tractor..

To check for that, just remove the Oil Cup at the bottom of the Air Cleaner and you bypass the upper Inlet Pipe..
