J D Model B

I'm wondering what kind of a road gear that a 1945 B has with 12/38 tires ? Would it be fast enough to be comfortable on tractor rides ?

Some of those "middle 40s" B tractors had a pretty lively road gear. Also considering it came with 10/38 tires or smaller, it should scoot right along.

From what I can glean from my book, you do not want a JD "B" with a 4-speed trans..top speed was 6.75 MPH..

The 6 speed models may be more what you want...

The Nebraska test data lists 6th gear as 12.25 MPH. This would be on 10X38 (new size 11.2X38) tires, and at 1150 engine RPM. This data is from test #366, in 1941. To the best of my knowledge (without checking parts books) the standard transmission gears should be the same up to 1947 (pressed steelframe/straight 6 speed). The 12-38 tires would give a 3-4% increase, and you can bump the RPM's up 5-10%. This should get you a speed of 13.5-14 MPH. Won't keep up with a Farmall M, but not too bad.

Expect a nice leisurely ride. None of the JD models were very fast on the roads. I had a model 530 and had to go down the road a few miles. I pulled out right behind an Amish buggy. On the flat we were about the same speed. Up hill I was gaining on him and down hill he pulled away from me. If you are by yourself it will be fine but if in a group ride you will get left in the dust by the Farmalls ! Those models of B's if still all-fuel pistons are real dogs too.

The hand crank 45 B my Father bought new has always run about 17 - 18 mph down the road with 11.38 rear tires, and I have it now with the original bill of sale, $1399.00 with equipment.

It's hard to stay with many other tractors if you ride a JD B I haven't ever been on one that was fast enough to ride except a 40V. Maybe some after market stuff to speed them up?

and as for me...show me a line of Farmalls going wide open in road gear and you will see me getting as far away from them as possible. I'm just sure everyone of them has a completely rebuilt steering....lol I've seen what can happen...ain't pretty.

Sounds like you and I should go on a tractor ride together. I could take my unstyled 1938 G. You get to see the country really well when you drive it down the road. My dad said it went 7mph but not sure it is that fast.

An early styled B like you are looking at will make the hair fly pretty easily. The later ones ('47 and later, up to the 530) were significantly slower.

Right....the early styled 6 speed John Deere's with the 2 shifting levers will move along about 14-15 miles an hour wide open in 6th gear, the later styled models with the single shift lever were sorta slow in comparison but would pull a lot more.

I don't remember mine being that fast ? but I have no way to check it either.
I'm betting if you remove the reverse interlock so you can go into high reverse it would be faster than forward. LOL.

My 45 B run well with it's 12/38 down the road. Front end wobble a bit, if you run about 15 lbs in one front tire and 30 in the other it will take some of the wobble out. My 2 cents,
