JD 50 - Straightening a bent oil filter body?

The mating surface on the filter body, where the filter head attaches, is slightly distorted. I have the block bare, and I'd like to try to straighten the bent area. Has anyone ever had any success straightening one of these? If so - were you able to straighten it without removing it from the block? What method did you use to straighten it?

I'd like to try using a couple of circular plates, with matching bolt holes, and sandwiching the bent area between the plates, then using bolts to squeeze it back flat.

I think if I had it out of the block, I could easily straighten it in my hydraulic press. I hate to remove it though - I can see that getting it pressed back into the block in proper alignment would be a big deal.

The filter head and all other parts are in good shape. The engine held good oil pressure before I tore it down.

A new filter body is no longer available.

Any tips will be appreciated. Thank you.

If just the top and not the body bent I straightened one on my B when it was torn down. Been awhile but I think it came right back to shape with some tapping from below with maybe a block of wood. Might also be able to have someone back up the top side with a large metal plate ? If you beat too hard from below it could just pop on up and out. Could put some index marks on it and the case so if it came out you could repair it and then get it back into place.

Thanks Mike - I found a post in the archives where you said you'd straightened one, and I wondered if you'd removed it first. I didn't know how much tapping it would stand before it came loose from the block.

I've got a plan for indexing it if I have to remove it - bolt a flat piece to the top of the can that also touches the left inside of the block. I hope I don't have to use that idea though.

The outer edge of the circle is not distorted, so it must have been sealing good out there. There was no gasket sealer on the joint between the filter head and the canister. I hate to ignore it while I have it down to where I can get my hands on it and can also see it good.

The ones I have removed were mainly from model H tractors. I have found more crushed ones in them for some odd reason ?
Usually a few hard whacks from a small hand sledge gets them out. I forget what size maybe 2 lb ?
I would for sure tap it back as flat as you can while in the tractor. I might of even used a large dia. metal round stock and just poke it up from below. Been so long ago. It had a decent bow in the top of it and I think it came out of it fairly easy.

Thanks Mike - I'll give a report of how it works out. You've given me some ideas.
