I have a 1959 430W that has "one" spring (left side when standing behind) to return the 3pt lift arms the lower position. It has the dual TOM, but the arms are pinned together. There is provision for the
second spring (on the right side) but none exists. The owner manual has pictures of one spring and pictures of two springs. Should I install the second spring?

Which way is the single or dual valve set and which rockshaft lever are you using? Isn't one spring enough to lower the rockshaft ?

I think when you say "setting" you are referring to the valve positioner under the left side of the seat, and it is correct per the owners and repair manual. I'm using the "outside" lever, near the wheel.
Yes, I believe one spring is sufficient, just want it to be right per original and not have some issue unknown to me. Thanks Buickanddeere, I do indeed appreciate your input.

Stroby, I had one of those. I put a spring on both sides.

Anyhow if you unpinned the dual tom and went to the dual mode, maybe the other spring is to bring the arm down that gets freed up in the unpinned mode?

What is your thoughts on that?

Buickanddeere, the service manual says that the outer lever is supposed to be used, with the inner lever in it's extreme rear position, when they are pinned together, the inner arm when they are independent.
pages 180-10-3 and 180-10-11. Along with that, the cross over valves have to be positioned correctly. Thanks for making me check that again though, I appreciate it.

Dave H. I suspect you have something there. I have the tractor at another location than where I am right now, and I can't find a decent picture in the manuals I have here. Makes perfect sense though.

My late model 420W with dual lift has two springs. It had two when I bought it and most I see with the dual lift have two springs.

Wow, nice has just about everything and looks factory fresh. Float ride seat, HD three rib fenders, pto shield, three point top link, dual rockshaft, power steering SCV option, front weights, spin out rims etc. The oval muffler is simple enough to find . Is that an alternator on there ?

BTW, no that is not an alternator.

Good to see a generator on there instead or an alternator. For what ever reason an alternator looks un-natural on a two cylinder .

Absolutely, I agree.
