1938 John Deere B Governor

Anyone known how to dis-assembly the governor shaft? I have the shaft on my workbench, out of the housing. I am thinking you need to press the gear off to replace bearings. Thanks

The 12 ton harbor freight press will do them. I would not want to be without mine. The late B service manual has very good info on pressing these apart even though it is a little different made.
Watch out for the snap rings ! Make sure you are not pressing against any.

Also make sure you support it close to the shaft while pressing. If the edge of the gear gets tension on it they will bust.

There is a snap ring under it so it has to come off first. I use a bearing separator which is a 2 part knife edge puller by some terms and grip it on the small lip on that drive coupling by pushing down on the spring and washer. I then support the outer edges of the bearing separator on the press frame and then press the shaft down and out of the coupling.

If it's anything like an H it's safer to disassemble
from the mag end. Like others said you need a press
and a bearing clamp. There's a good chance you will
break the gear if trying to start from that end.
Also watch closely for snap rings.
