630 john deere

Just a small thing but just learned yesterday the decal for the 1960 630JD are not the same as the decal for the 1958 and 1959.Ben working on mine for 2 1/2 years and just found this out.Always something new to learn.

There are no correct decals made for any 20 or 30 series tractor by anyone. On all 20 and 30 series tractors when new the yellow on the hood was a decal. That is why they faded to white fairly often. I am surprised that no one has has started making correct original decals. It sure would make painting a 20 or 30 easier. The difference in the decals you are talking about has to do with the color inside the letters themselves if I remember correctly. Tom

Havn t got decals yet so don t know but serial number was needed to get the correct ones. Not a big deal.Would have used any good decal.Just surprised there was any difference.think the post about the collor was right. Thanks

I don't know ? I think painting the yellow on would be easier than wrestling a decal that large into position ? I never had an issues painting the yellow on it actually goes on real nice over the green.

On my Grandpa's '58 620 the hood decal "John Deere" is one whole decal with yellow back but doesn't make up all the yellow on the hood. I always thought this tractor wasn't entirely repainted but now I'm not sure.

I also haven't seen any decals for the latter model number decals for the 620. They're all the angle type "620" number, not the straight across bold "620"

That is interesting as we always painted the yellow first. That we did not have to worry about overspray on the green. Once I left the tape on over the weekend and when I removed it some of my yellow came along:( Tom

All 20 series tractors came from the factory with the cursive, slanted numbers. The repaint kits from Deere and others at first only offered the numbers like on the 30 series, in block style print. That is
why you see some with the block style numbers, but they did not come from the factory that way.

Thanks, I would have never guessed this tractor was repainted that much. Must have been done a LONG time ago because everything is faded the same, no flacks or layers of paint, overspray, etc. The rear wheels were the only noticeable things with touch ups.

When I was a kid the neighbor got a new 730 in 1959. Next year, in 1960 dad bought a new 630. I remember the talk about the 630 having the gold inset in the '630' numbers when the 730 was all yellow inside the number outline.

I ag mech school our instructor was an old JD mechanic. He had us paint all the hood green first and then mast off and then spray the yellow. Has worked fine for me on several. You also have to mast the green off in such a way to put the yellow on the surfaces just like the decal would of been.

Back in 1985 when I painted my 720 D I don't think anyone had the proper ones out yet. I did buy a set from JD for the industrial models that had the proper styling to the numbers but the decals were in black and not green. I do think they look better than the "correct" green ones. Years after that I saw another tractor maybe a 620 ? someone else did that way too.
