I had a post going on the JD 40 running rough and I have about narrowed the problem down to the carburetor The tractor runs the best when the Idle adjustment is completely closed and the Load is out 1 1/4 rounds Can someone please give me some ideas as to what is going on, The carb has just been installed after Yesterdays Tractor rebuilt it could they have missed something?
Thanks Jerry

Well if you have checked for vacuum leaks in the manifold etc yes they may have missed something when they rebuilt that carb

I had a few that idled best with that screw all the way in. I can't remember how far out I had to turn my load needle to get them to pull a load but it seems to me it was more than you had to do ? If the adjustments do make a difference than likely not clogged up inside ?

I have read somewhere but can't find it again that an engine will run with the load closed if the idle is working properly
My engine will shut down when the idle is closed

There is also a stop screw on the throttle shaft that if it is not screwed in enough to keep the rpm up the engine will die. Or it could have clogged idle passages ?

I would say you have another issue that is keeping the throttle plate open enough that the idle circuits are not being used.

That particular carb is one that the idle mixture adj. needle regulates air and therefor the further you screw it in, the less air it gets and the richer the idle mixture. All the way in would let only fuel flow into idle ports and cause a slobbery rich idle or tractor would stop. It's obvious it was never tractor tested. Yes, something inside is amiss.

Could be as simple as a maladjusted float! If the fuel level in the bowl is too LOW, it will run lean by nature & closing the idle needle may improve things but not solve it. Check for air leaks between carb & manifold, past throttle shaft, between manifold & head & if none are found check fuel level in the carb when looking for dirt in the idle fuel passages and for broken or bad gasketing between the main halves of the carburetor.

Closing the load needle on these will kill 'em every time because ALL fuel goes through the load passageway but the load needle doesn't "meter the idle fuel" because idle fuel is so small a portion of the passageway's capacity. Kinda like cows through a gate. If the gate is five cows wide & six cows want through at the same time (imagine THAT) one will be restricted! If only one or two pass through at a time, there is no restriction. The load needle meters load fuel because load fuel flow rate is many times greater in volume than idle fuel. Six cows versus one or two. Since both the idle & load fuel passes through the load needle's passageway, when it gets closed off, she no run!

I don't recall if that one has throttle shaft bushings or not but if it does, maybe they're not fully inserted to meet the main bore & air is bypassing 'round the throttle plate & shaft because of the gap?

Even saw one once that started & pulled just fine but simply could not be made to idle nicely. Throttle plate was just improperly installed like it slipped when the screws were tightened.

Hope that helps ya find it.
