420 electrical, how is it possible?

Bought a 58 420, it ran, I used it. Had to charge the 12 volt battery each time and figured I would deal with it in the winter. Now as I try to figure out what is going on I find it has 12 volt battery, negative ground. 6 volt JD model TY1444 generator that does not function. Has a DR 6 volt coil, no external voltage regulator on coil. Has DR distributor. Has 6 volt, while not original, stock regulator behind the dash and the entire thing is wired just like the diagram says it should be. Other than no charge, it runs like a top. Also replaced headlights with new 6 volt before realizing battery was 12 and they function. Why have lights not blown or coil cooked?

Sometimes you just get lucky. Back in the day I've changed auto's over to 12v and had bulbs last a year or more before they blew. Then again I've had them blow as soon as
they were turned on. Coil's seem to work out the same way but when they blow there's shrapnel flying so they are plum dangerous.
