Doing the head gasket on a 1020 for buddies wife. Is this one that needs new head bolts when changing the gasket. Head is in the shop being checked. Exhaust manifold had a broken tab, so that is being replaced too. Took a straight edge to the block, it seems OK. Just wondered about new bolts and retorque if necessary? I am used to dealing with car gas engines, not much experience with oil burners except driving semi for the last 30 years. Thanks, Bob.

John Deere never claimed any need for new head-bolts. Re-torquing the head-gasket, yes. Might be different with a newer aftermarket gasket.

Early engines had shorter head bolts.
I've seen them pull the threads out.
Measure yours and replace only if they
are the shorter ones.

That is what I thought and the head gasket most likely is not the issue, the liners are leaking,if you want to fix it keep on going and change the piston ant lingers now..if have seen this many times...

Tim I just pulled down a 1520 with water in the oil. I bought it thinking bad sleeves but found antifreeze on top two pistons and the sleeves are perfect so I guess cracked head. The head gasket looked ok. I also am learning that no aftermarket company has a overhaul kit for a 1520 gas. Diesel sleeves and head gasket are the same so I might have to get my pistons from Deere and the rest aftermarket. Tom

The early Dubuque engines came new with just one seal per sleeve and often developed bad leaks (coolant into crankcase). Deere came out with a fix for all of them except for the 1010-2010 series. If your 1020 has one seal per sleeve, the replacements will have three seals per sleeve.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your knowledge. Have never dealt with a sleeved engine. Looks like it's gonna be fun! Will probably have a few more questions once it warms up, not going to get into that big of a project until it warms up some.. Thanks again, Bob.

Mixing and matching parts can lead to trouble.Sometimes aftermarket head gaskets are not made to jd specs.I bought one a few years ago that was just overhauled and was loosing water out the overflow. The owner was sick of it and just wanted it gone.I pulled the head off and found the aftermarket head gasket was not sealing around the sleeves.I installed a new jd gasket and it ran fine.
