Older hand start A
Starts good, Runs very good at idle and high speed
The problem is no mid range,..... Move the throttle just a hair and it goes from idle to full speed.
Had to dealer who is an expert at 60's and 70's tractors but not very well versed in 2 cyl.
He removed and went over carb.
Removed and went over governor, installed 4 new brgs and checked it over. He said he did not see anything wrong inside governor besides brgs.
spent more on this than it could ever be worth !
PLEASE HELP,
Thanks in advance

Had the same exact problem on a later A. The cast governor arm that mounts on the vertical shaft
coming out of the top of the governor was loose and the arm was rotating on the shaft. When the
governor tried to slow the engine the shaft rotated but the arm did not.
The square head screw that locks the arm to the shaft has a reduced diameter at the inboard end and
it goes into a shallow hole in the shaft. This locks the arm to the shaft and puts the arm in the
correct position.
Check yours to make sure the screw is in the hole and the jam nut is tight.

Sounds like the weights inside the governor are stuck on the shaft. Does it over speed or does the governor control top speed? Ron Mn

Make sure the throttle rod to carb. is adjusted correctly (length) and not binding.Check to make sure the cotter key in the throttle rod is not hanging up on the carb. casting.

Could have gov. weight arms pushing against the bearing and not the end of the operating sleeve like they are to be on those models ? But double check all the outside adjustments and easy things first. Throttle shaft may be too tight also.

Disconnect the throttle linkage at the carburetor and move the throttle by hand at the carb. Do you have midrange now. If you do then its either a governor problem or a linkage problem. If not then it is a carb problem.

the governor housing where the brg fits on the Dist side was worn out. Wwe had to reem and put a sleeve in it.
Will take it out again and check weights. looked kinda chewed on

Before you go to all that trouble just to find nothing wrong inside, you might want to actually set the length of the control link to factory specs and maybe fudge it some to see if you can get governor action to return. This setting is very picky, one turn will make a real difference. Disconnect link at carb and lift it out with engine off. With hand throttle full forward, set link length such that it is 1/2 hole short from dropping into the carb hole when you hold the carb throttle wide open. Sometimes a straight drop in is required, sometimes one needs to set it such that it's more than a half hole.

Issue is that the governor only works over one inch of travel movement, the carb only has one inch of travel possible. Setting it such that those two are the exact same one inch then gets kinda touchy.
