720 power steering leak

i put a factory wide front on my 720 last spring and now it is leaking under neath i used the same bolts on the steering arm that came off of it, i switched it from 1 tractor to another so I'm pretty sure the bolts are the right length as the one it came off of wasn't leaking. is it just coincidence that it started leaking after i switched front ends or does not having the weight of the tractor pushing down on the pedestal have something to do with it? i have seals, bushings, and bearings ordered to do a complete reseal just wondering if this is common when switching front ends?

Well I never really swapped front ends but it is VERY common for them to leak. I'm betting once you get it apart the O-rings are by now worn flat on one side. Good chance with the shaft being disturbed a little bit it showed up leaking on you. Check the end play and write it down of the shaft before tear down so adjustments can be made at assembly time.

I've changed from narrow to wide and back several times and never caused a leak. Like mike M said the O rings are probably worn out and flat. When a narrow front is on the tractor there is still up and down movement in the pedestal. Any time the front end goes over a bump at a little faster speed or any time a person gets a little quick pushing in the clutch the front end will lift enough to make the pedestal move vertically. Come to think of it, a narrow front might cause more O ring wear than a narrow front.

I have switched from a factory narrow front to a factory square wide front on one of my 70D's. The bolts used on the narrow front are longer than those used to attach the steering arm used on the wide front. Whether this is what happened in your case I do not know but I know some damage can be done by using bolts that are too long. Regardless used the correct bolts as specified in the parts manual and repair the leak as it appears you are prepared to do. In the process of doing one myself at this time on a 70 gas std.

oh yes i forgot about checking end play before tear down, thanks for reminding me, only been through one pedestal before and i missed that step when i tore it apart so it went back together as it was before but seemed to be with in spec i think. i do have the Deere service manual for the power steering that i intend to follow closely.

bolts should be right length as i took them out and put them back in in the time it took me to get axle moved over from the other tractor to this one, but anything is possible, i will double check their length when i have them out

also the manual i have for the power steering is the sm2050 but the one my tech manual for the tractor tells me to use is sm2016, does anyone know if there is much difference between the two, or if i will have problems using the sm2050 manual instead of the sm2016 that the tech manual calls for?

thanks
