4020 oil bath to dry element.

I have a '65 JD 4020 with a precleaner stack that is oil bath. Is there a way to change it to a dry element? I know you can find a used dry
cleaner assembly form all states Ag for $550 bucks plus frieght. I've heard you can take the guts outta a oil bath and replace it with dry element
guts but I'm not sure if that is true. Also looked into Donaldson Co. for newer dry filter assemblies. All plastic, not tough enough to support a 48
inch steal pre cleaner pipe. Any thoughts and help is appreciated. Thanks Barry.

I'd be cautious, I think you need to have the same resistance to low air flow at idle, and you also need the same resistance to air flow at high speed. Lots if meshes might fit, but how do you know you have the correct same resistance? How do you know you are admitting the correct amount of air? Too much resistance would be bad, too little bad also. That's what the JD engineers made sure of. Pretty important. not just guesswork.

Gutting and converting an oil bath is not easy, I am still working on one for my MH, I would leave it alone or find one.

I have two 4020's, one with oil bath and one dry. I don't have a problem with either of them. I like not having to buy filter elements for the oil bath tractor but servicing is needed more often. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Mike

That oil bath has worked all those years why is it bad now?
The dry filter casing is designed differently outside and
would be a big problem to gut and redo.
If you think you have to change replace the whole thing.
