720 axle shafts

on a row crop 720, anyone know if a person can replace the normal 88" tread axle shafts p/n af1427r with the 104" tread axle shafts p/n af1676r or 112" shafts p/n af1677r with out changing axle housings? parts book shows different housings for the different shafts.

The housings are matched to the different shafts. Extra long shafts have different bearings and the housing is machined to fit them. On my 720, the cast part number is ground off so ? not to be confused with shorter axle housing. Parts book not here and don't remember now if the mid length shaft and short one use the same housing. Check the housing part description

If the ID and width of the bearings are the same then any axle shafts should work in any housing. If only the OD is different that would be why the housings are different. I never checked that, do not ever want to have to either

i did some research today, the inside bearings are the same id for the long and short axles, but the cups for the inside have different od, so one would think that you could use inside bearing for short shaft on the long shaft, but i have the parts guy getting me more info as to what is different with those 2 bearings.

the out side bearings tho the bearing for the long axle is obsolete so he couldn't look up specs for it, got him checking if he can find one through dealer network or something to get measurement, other wise i may have to have some one measure the long axle to see if it is the same diameter as the short axle and if not call a bearing supplier and see if they can match up something with supplied id and od.

both outside and inside cups have larger od on the longer shafts, inside cups are .25" larger and outside are .1 something larger ( don't have numbers in front of me now)

that's all assuming that i can find a pair of long shafts and that the bearings are the same distance apart on long shaft as they are on short shaft of course.

If you can post the bearing numbers. I would like to have that info in my parts book. I have old SAE handbooks that list the specs for some classes of various kinds of bearings, to four decimal places. I'll look numbers up and post back here.

Just went to shop and found the crossover list, so you do not have to send me numbers.Just looked at the inner cones, width is same,13125 in. Id same 3.0000 in. and the OD are 5.0000 and 5.2500 in.. The outer brgs show same ID 3.1875 in. Info from a 1959 SAE handbook. So looks like shafts can be swapped. HTH, George

IF check out housings you will find they are longer in the bearing spacing for the longer axles . why are so many guys always trying to make it so dam hard just believe the the book Deere knows what it made

don't have actual numbers off bearings as i don't have it apart yet and haven't ordered any parts for it yet. parts guy says the inside bearing for long axle is about 0.092 wider and has a different radial load number than the other. (which i assume has to do with the angle of the rollers?) radial load of 6749.99 for short axle vs 7849.99 for long axle

its not that dam hard to ask a question and that's what the board is for, so others can share their wisdom and experiences. that way people don't have to waste money trying to do something some one else has already proved wont work.
