1948 JD B clutch sliping

My JD B will go about 100 yards before the chutch begins to slip. I have pulled the chutch several times to try and find out what the problem is. Crank end play is about .003. Discs are in good shape. Both the hub and spacer plate look good. It's driving me nuts. I have the JD manual for this tractor, so I know the parts are in the correct order. Any help please.

Suspect wear in the clutch bolt head to clutch dog interface. Where the TEE headed bolt fits into the fork of the clutch dog the hardened bolt wears a dimple into the cast fork of the dog. This is NOT really a problem as long as you set the bolt back into that indentation when adjusting the clutch.

If you pull the clutch back when it stops moving, there likely is very little snap to it right?

BEFORE you do anything else, grab all three bolts (one at a time) leaving the cotters in place & rotate them gently either direction as far as you can & then see what snap you have. I'll bet it changed and may even be so tight as to prevent snapping into the engaged position. Rock them back & forth until you gain a feel for their "home" position. They're kinda like a favorite chair or truck seat that's broken in to your rear & so is comfy only in one particular position.

If so, remove the cotter keys one at a time & turn each nut one castle, install the cotter and then rock each nut and bolt while watching for that "sweet" spot or indentation. If you don't set the bolts there when adjusting, they will find that spot & then rest there until you disturb them again but your clutch will be loose.

ONLY after you've adjusted them then have set them back to their long used and happy home position will they stay put. Some find their home position quickly others may take days of operation. You have to either set those bolts back into their "ruts" or replace lots of parts. Since this wear really doesn't hurt anything or affect function, I keep my money & set the bolts into their ruts.

Hope that's all it is & this is helpful. Been there.

Did U check the dog bones to make sure they aren't worn. That could prevent the clutch from fully engaging. New T bolts and dog bones are available at oldJD4u.com. They are good people with good prices.

Maybe you're already doing this but I just have to ask if you have the clutch ENGAGED when tightening the three nuts.

If you don't move the clutch forward and tighten or loosen the nuts until it feels like the clutch wants to snap into position.

When I first did it on the '51 B I couldn't get a good snap out of it until I tightened or loosened the nuts while pulling the lever to engage the clutch. I got a GOOD snap when engaging/disengaging the clutch now!
