2640 countershaft friction plug / clutch release issues

My 2640 clutch releases fine at idle. At higher engine speeds have to shift quickly or it grinds and have to idle engine down to be able to shift. It has a button clutch, pilot bearing is new, no serious wear in flywheel or pressure plate. Intent to put an organic clutch in it. However, what's the chances the countershaft friction plugs / springs are worn out and that is the real issue? Is it common for them to wear out? It would appear to remove the counter shaft to replace those plugs is a lot of sugar for a dime so to speak. Split tractor at clutch and transmission, remove the rockshaft housing and slip everything off the countershaft to get it out just to get to $100 in parts that may or may not be worn out. Just how much resistance do they provide? How hard should the input shaft be to turn if they are working as designed? If the clutch is releasing properly do they really make that much difference?

Hi-Lo, independent PTO, no reverser

Thanks,

That's actually my hope and
considering the amount of work
necessary to replace those plugs
it would be worth putting the new
clutch in and trying it. Tractor
had a neglected life before I
acquired it and been fed the
cheapest hydraulic oil possible.
So they could be worn. I
would"assume" those plugs should
last a lifetime or at least
average usable life of tractor.

I agree with TJ. I've never replaced those plugs.
Those button disks are bad about twisting and dragging.
It would be unusual that the pressure plate and flywheel
are good. That's another problem with metallic clutches,
they wear out the pressure plate and flywheel faster than
than they wear.
