John Deere 1240 planter, are they any good??

I have been looking for a 4 row 7000 finger pickup planter to plant sweetcorn... they are hard to find around here and if i do find one, they want a fortune for it! I found a 1240 plateless planter with liquid fertilizer in very good condition.. the guy want $2000...does this seem reasonable or kinda steep? you dont see many around so i would like to know if anyone has any experience with one and the pros and cons???? since sweetcorn seed varies in size, and a lot of the seed is very small, its hard to get a plate planter to do a good consistent job. thats why im looking for a finger pickup.. thanks for any help!

In my estimation that price is extremely high for a 1200 series planter. In my area (northeast Missouri) you could buy a nice 7000 four row planter for that money. I'm not sure where you are but I would keep looking. The 7000 planter is a much better planter of the two. Mike

I don't know where you are, but I have a 4 row 7000, I would sell for $2000. I have used it for about 10 years. I now use a 6 row. It is a planter only, no fertilizer on it. It is set up for no til too.

I think he is too high by about $1800. As Mike said, 2k should buy a 4 row 7000. The 7000 will be WAY ahead in the areas of openers and closing technology. Keep looking.

Where are you located? Around here (SW WI), you can easily find a good 4 row 7000 with fertilizer for $2000 or less. They're getting to be pretty old, and very few people want a 4 row planter anymore. Your biggest competitors will be Amish and Mexicans. Amish pull them with horses. Mexicans ship them south, rebuild them into 6r30, and ship them back north. They usually want 8rw and 12r planters to do that to, though. The 4 row units tend to stay down there.

1240 plateless planters aren't the worst planter out there, but you should pay around $500 for one. The 7000 is considerably better. I'm assuming you're not planning on planting a lot of acres if you want one for sweet corn?
