3 cylinder 179 ci engine main bearings

I am in the process of doing an in frame overhaul on a 3 cylinder 179 ci john deere 2240. My question is on the front main crankshaft bearing. Is it possible to remove the bearing cap without pulling the front cover? It looks like the oil pump idler gear collar is going to be in the way of removing the cap. Has anyone out there had any success at this?

Time and money will be saved in the long run by removing the engine , performing a full teardown, cleanup , inspection and measuring.

I also prefer to completely remove the engine.
That being said you can remove the nut holding
the drive gear on the oil pump shaft w/o removing
the front cover. Then remove the pump.
If you are talking about the idler shaft bolt you
should be able to remove that bolt also.
Not possible on early 1020 and 2020 engines.
