When did JD put computers in Tractors?

Still trying to figure out a new tractor purchase...

What year did JD start putting computers in tractors? Thinking in terms of Mid-2000's 20 or 30 series tractors versus mid to late 1990's 00 series tractors. If I do not want a tractor with a computer am I going back to the 55 series?

Kind of depends upon what your definition of "computer" is.

I have heard a few stories of tractors built in the last 10 years or so having a code thrown, much like a modern vehicle, and then cutting engine power just enough to allow the tractor to limp to the barn for repairs. The only person who can then typically repair is JD serviceman. Not to mention the shenanigans with JD last year where the farmer doesn't own the proprietary info in the computer itself and shouldn't be allowed to access it. I guess if I am going to purchase a used tractor I'd rather make sure I am outside of that computer window is my point/concern.

I just heard about a 850C series 2 crawler that the Deere guy had to come out and trick the computer so they could move it out of the way. Only one track would drive.

Was afraid I was looking at going back to 50 or 55 series to truly stay out of computers. Nothing wrong with that but finding a good low hour used one around me is tough and you are going to pay dearly for a 20+ year old machine. I'm not sure if I can talk the folks who own the operation into doing that as they are looking for new machinery for tax purposes.

So would it be safe to say a 6400 has less computer than a 6330 which has less computer than a new 6100 series?

My 4255 has no electronic rockshaft controller. It has Intellitrak that once engine is running I can disconnect electrical system and engine will continue to operate as will trans & hyd functions.

I have all older stuff but I have no idea how anyone can afford these newer series tractors once warranty runs out. Just for the simple fact that you are reliant upon deere and waiting around for techs to come out with their laptops to fix stupid electrical stuff all the time. The rates and service call fees are rediculuous. The small independent guys such as Tim are truly blessings and hope they can be around for a long time as I sure don't know any young mechanics that can fix anything without a computer these days.

The hard part for me is it is partially not my choice. The folks who own the farm need tax write-offs and a shiny new machine is what they have their sights on. I don't farm full time and I am concerned that any down time will really mess with my ability to get done what I need to when I need it done. Maybe we should just refresh the 2555 and look for a good used 55 series cab tractor. A 2955 would be about the right size and HP for what we are looking to do. A 3155 would be even better but getting up into 4055 etc are really too big.

Dealers can't fix them either. Cousin picked up some 7000 ? series that the pto does not work on it. Some sensor bad or something. He had the dealer out and they could not figure it out. Not sure he may of got it fixed himself by now.
