520: 3 pt hitch

Have a 520 with only the cast arms that are splined to the rock shaft. Seems like it would be nice at times to have a complete 3 point , although more stuff in the way when getting on and off of the tractor.

Most of the complete original style kits are around $1600. I'm also seeing that rounding up original parts will not be inexpensive. The basic non original type kits are much less $$, but don't look too nice either.

School me on 520 JD point hitches ! ( None of my old Oliver tractors have 3 point hitches -so I am not familiar with the pros and cons )

Factory JD 3pt. is & works much better than aftermarket hitches [that my opinion]// Question: does your 520 have factory center link yoke /see pics/[ some tractors were ordered without] If not installing it can be costly; I check Ads on places like Craigslist etc. .. seen one on there a few days ago priced at $900 I think... 520 thru 630 hitches are same, elephant ears cast # R5312 & R5313/ on 720 & 730 elephant ears are dif. rest on hitch the same... ...

If you have a need for it, go for it. If not, they are what you thought... in the way when you want to get on and off, complete with lots of places to skin up a knee or shin.

I thing the John Deere three point on the twenty and thirty series was the strongest and most useable hitch made at the time. The sliding lower links and the right and left adjustable lift arms made it the best three point hitch at the time. The Ford and Ferguson only adjusted length on the right side and no adjustment on the lower draft links for length on the early ones for hooking up to your implement. Although on the sixtyfive Massy-Ferguson you did have a pin release swivel that gives you a couple of inches of fore and aft adjustment. You will have to get use to getting on and off your tractor in front of the rear axle with the use of a front step bolted to the front of the real axel housing. I've seen quite a few lift arm rods on the Fords and Fergusons that were bent or welded. They were not strong enough. You will also have to watch when buying a John Deere three point for your 520 that only the 520 to the 630 hitch will fit. The so called elephant-ear from 720-730 tractors are different and will not fit your 520.

I have one on Craig's list. Possibly the one mentioned. In MN. Price depends on condition. Used aftermarket are from free to $250. Not anywhere near as good as the originals.

a 3 pt hitch is really handy allowing you to use lots of different implements. As far as getting on and off, there are lots of steps on Ebay that will allow access from the front. I had the same issue on my Farmals with aftermarket 3 points. I picked up a couple steps that fit JD tractors and make it easier to get on and off from the front.

THANKS to all who provided information. " long green line man " yes, my tractor has the center link attachment yoke

I understand your frustration of tractor without the hitch. A long time now deceased friend of mine always wondered why the market on the 3 point hitches. The John Deere 20 & 30 series seem to be the most popular cannibalism for separate sale of the hitches. I can't think of many if any others that have fallen prey to this circumstance. Anyway good luck on finding the components but I'd say you may be looking at $1500. I always bought the tractor with this included.

I think one of the reasons the 3pt hitch on the 20 & 30 series is a little hard to find was a design flaw(error?). The hitch came off so easily that when it wasn't needed, it was taken off and set aside. Things get misplaced... Another reason (probably more so) was that when these tractors came out, not everyone was sold on using 3pt hitches yet. There were still lots of trailer plows, and trailer rotary mowers. The sickle mowers bolted to the drawbar frame. And when the farmers (a notoriously cheap bunch; I can say that. I are one too...) were buying a new tractor, many didn't feel the need to spend the extra money for a "new fangled optional accessory". Thus the reason for the rarity and high demand for 3pt hitches on these tractors. We all know how handy the hitch is nowadays. Center links... Phttt. Those got taken off and left somewhere and subsequently lost. Look at how rare the dual hydraulics are. No one ordered those much; now full sets command $1000.00 without the second coupler set.
Just my $.02 and YMMV...

A three point hitch doesn't make it all that hard to get on and off from the rear in my opinion though it isn't completely out of the way either. You learn how to mount and dismount without getting bruised after a few bumps. Seems to me like dismounting is the worst. Wheels set for 30" rows makes it tougher.

i can get you an original style aftermarket 3 point hitch that looks and functions as the original. my email is open send me a message and i can get you a price.

I have the earlier "800/801" on my 520 and it IS handier than the "Correct one" on either my 630 or 720..

I can reach the adjusting lever when the lift if partly raised to adjust that side and it also has the extending lower arms..

"Elephant Ears" are not needed with this 3-point and it came on JD 50, 60 and 70 tractors, so it is plenty strong..

I use an after-market center Link and for "Swing Control", I use a short link between the Left lower arm and the Drawbar..makes it easy to put an implement on or off, since the arm can be screwed out or in by hand, to let the Left arm engage the 3- point pin..

Besides, they are much cheaper when you find them..
