1968 4020 Value

I'm looking at a 1968 4020 that's up for auction in a couple days and I'm wondering what a fair purchase price would be. It's a power shift and seems to run and drive good. I only drove it when it was cold so not sure if something could act up after its up to operating temp or pulling it hard. It has 16.9-38 tires that will probably need replaced if a guy wanted to use the tractor in the field. The tractor has 2 remotes and the 3 point hitch is complete and operational. The only major problem I see is that the PTO doesn't turn off which I've heard could be as simple as a linkage issue or could be an expensive fix if the tractor has to be split. I'm thinking a fair price for this tractor would be $5500-6000. What do you guys think?

Seen this tractor in pics on the auction block tomorrow. The PTO will require a two split of the tractor to fix with the powershift transmission. Picture looks like the tractor is clean but I am sure it will bring closer to $7500 if not a little more.

When a power shift is cold they can turn slowly but if pressure is applied they will stop.If indeed the pto brake is bad it will take some time and money to fix it as stated double split and at JD $1500+.I would hook it up to a pto if possible and see if it turns with resistance. The salvage value of a 4020 tractor if nice is $45 per H.P.[ $4500]In excellent condition being non side counsel I would say $9000 tops or less with needing tires. Lots of variables.Dont like to buy problems as they should be free.

Sharp clean '68' power shift, will bring in $7500 to $9500 price range; 38" wheel & rims, a plus, heavier center cast wide front, a-plus, dual hyd.,dual hubs, looks like it could have a alt. 12 volt ?? ... original cond. & paint. later '68' #188342....go the extra dollar..... I would....

Poor tires and needing a split I certainly wouldn't pay over $6,000. Do you really want a power shift? I would find a nice syncro.

I think your price is closer to right than the $7500-$10,000.
You will have those higher prices invested by the time you get
repairs done.

My guess would be 8000. Most people tend to overlook mechanical problems at auctions. They always think they can fix it on the cheap.

Picture really helps.I see it has JD hubs that would bring $400,the 38 in casting are a plus and possibly has worn Firestones which are the only tires you can sell w/10/20% for pulling tires. On that model the weep holes will tell you about o rings and it appears to be at dealer so PTO should be easy to hook up.Still in top condition wouldn't bring much over $9K.

The tractor does look pretty nice. I'm guessing it will bring $7500 or more. The PTO thing will cost more than the 1500 listed below if you have Deere fix it. I'm guessing twice that, depending on what is
wrong.

Also, NEVER, EVER, try to stop that shaft with your hand. Not knowing how hard it is to stop, you could lose your arm!!!!

can you post what the tractor brings, hope you get it
great little farm tractor, Im sure many others are curious what it sells for.
I grew up on a 3020 and 4020 power shift. best tractors ever built and always on hi demand.
It really is hard to guess what a tractor will bring at an auction sale.
thanks and good luck.

The tractor sold for $8000 and I didn't buy it. The highest I bid was $6500 since I would've had to spend an additional $5000 ($3000 on PTO and $2000 for new tires) to make it field ready. The auctioneer did mention the PTO issue before the bidding started and the tractor was running for about 3 hours so people could see it had a problem. The tractor was also leaking from the hydraulic pump but the PTO was the major issue.

It is amazing how the 4020s have held their value. It looked top be a nice older tractor but with PTO and needing tires I think you can do better. The side counsel are worth the extra money if you ever plan to resell it.Looks to be a nice one in Photo ads.
