John Deere 550 C dozer dropping out of gear

My 550 C John Deere dozer operates fine in every way but one. It randomly drops out of gear while moving - as if the clutches are activated. I thought it was the steering clutches, so I replaced them, but that did not help. Any ideas?

Check the shifter safety bar the next time it quits. They get some age on them and it doesn't quite get fully in the released position and when you hit a bump it shakes it just enough to drop the trans out of gear.

I learned more today. After the dozer got warm - running about an hour - it starting moving without normal force and finally quit moving at all - either forward or backward. After letting it set for about 10 minutes, I was able to drive it to a shed. One hour later it seemed fine. Can anyone give me an idea where to start in diagnostics?

Thanks,
