hello,I am currently working on a 3010,changing the pto shift pins, about 15 years ago I replaced the counter shaft,it had broken teeth and it was noisy in several gears. It was fine after that and the owner said the transmision worked great after that.I was looking things over before reassembly and I noticed small gear on the counter shaft had one broken tooth.Anyone know what the main cause of this is?When I worked on it the first time the owner didn't have any clue what might have caused it,or he didn't want to tell me.Thanks for any input.

Might have been a problem with the broken teeth, if you look up the countershaft in the parts book it subs to a different number and a different gear on the main shaft and on the top shaft. Found out about this when I had to fix a noisy trans on a 4010 a few years ago, last place just replaced the bad gear on the top shaft and didn't realize that the countershaft and the gear on the main shaft had to be replaced also. chris

I wonder if operator shifts trans ranges before tractor comes to a complete stop would cause such tooth breakage?

If I was repairing the tiny pto speed change pins I'd alter the pto to 540 rpm only and eliminate the tiny pins similar to what I did back in the 80's IF owner of tractor approved pto speed alteration plan.

When your dealing with a gear set that is over 50 years old a lot of things can cause it...

That was a weak point on those. I think Deere had a recall
back then. The newer counter shaft had a larger gear and
corresponding gears also had to be replaced. That changed
the ratio taking some of the pressure off the counter shaft.

Getting stuck and using 7th gear reverse to rock the tractor and the worst is slamming into park while still moving .

Thanks for the response, just wondering, does anyone know where to find a dummy shaft for trans. overhaul?I use a piece of exhaust tubing, but it is a bit of a struggle.
