Model B and Model H questions

1.
I am preparing a friend's "B" for a parade this Saturday.
I can't find the transmission oil level check location.
I found the engine oil and Powr-trol oil level check locations.
I have the official JD "B" manual. I see everything else in it, but not the transmission level check location?
A picture would be very helpful !

2.
Another friend just bought a rough JD model "H".
We won't get the manuals in time for the parade this weekend.
If you can tell me where the engine oil level check and the transmission level checks are located, that would be very helpful.
Pictures would be very helpful.
(I hate not having the manuals,,,,,, and having to ask these basic questions!)

Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon

The transmission oil level check on the B is the fill plug located on the back cover, near the PTO. The large plug sits on a 45% angle. The oil should be at the the bottom of the threads for the plug.

For the H look on the left side below the flywheel. A pipe plug to the rear is the transmission level. The hex petcock to the front is engine oil. Open it with the outer hex head. You may have to hold the long body with another wrench. Fill till the oil runs out.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]coonie minnie[/b:654c4848f0].

Take a look at the photo below of "Uncle Earl" our 1939 Model B.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

Will Rogers once said "[i:654c4848f0]A man only learns in two ways, one by reading, and the other by association with smarter people.[/i:654c4848f0]"

I have benefited from both here on the John Deere forum.

Thank You Everyone.
This information is what I need.

We really appreciate the help!
This tractor needs a LOT of work.

Jon

We can't find the serial number tag on this "H".
- Any ideas?
- A picture of the location perhaps?

Thanks very much,
Jon

Early models below # 27000 were on the LH side of the main case on the flywheel side. If looking at the flywheel it would be to the upper left on the side of the main case. Then after that serial number since you could add electric start that area was machined flat and holes tapped for the starter bracket so it was moved to the right side of the main case. Now I'm forgetting if it is on the top or side of the case ? Even if it is gone you usually can see where the rivets are.

OK - thanks Mike. We will look again.
The tractor is really dirty and when we couldn't find a metal plate I wondered if they started engraving the serial number in the casting!

Since you mentioned rivets, I assume it should be a metal plate similar to my "D" and a friend's "B"

TNX,
Jon
