Working on a widowers 4020 Deere syncro range tractor. She was moving some road gravel with the tractor and she seen a puff of smoke from under the deck and so she stopped the tractor and shut it down. I checked for electrical shorting under the deck first and oil leaks, none found. The tractor shifts fine through the gears with the engine off but will not shift if running. If you hold the shifter to 1st with clutch full out or disconnected the tractor will move forward but not shift in to gear. I think it's a clutch problem, but would like your thought too.

Is the clutch pedal "feel' normal? If not it would indicate a failed throwout bearing and damaged release "fingers".

If that's OK, it sure sounds like the clutch has failed.

You could (engine OFF) remove the inspection cover under the clutch and have a look up there for debris indicating the lined plate has come apart, or metal pieces, possibly indicating a clutch finger or release bolt has failed or has come loose and gone out of adjustment.

Did not get enough time to pull cover off, but definitely will do on Saturday. Clutch feels like it working mechanically but something doesn't feel right about it!
