1010 Radiator

Trying to restore a 1010. Last thing I need to fix before I can start it is the radiator. It's got 3 holes in it that I tried to solder shut but failed. I covered the whole from the outside with solder but it kept going around the patch. I can't find one from Deere, and I can't replace it with a modern radiator because the steering shaft goes through the top of it. The radiator repair place wants 414 bucks to re core it. Anybody know where I could get one cheaper than 400 bucks or a way to repair those holes? Thanks folks.

Are you using acid core solder ? About have to due to them being so dirty. If in the tube area I have seen where others have cut back the fins and crimped the tubes shut and then soldered them.

No, I just laid the radiator flat, heated the solder up with a blow torch, and let it drip over the spot where it was leaking, I got about a quarter size blob of solder of the spot but it just goes around.

So then your saying you do not know how to solder it correctly. One needs to heat the area of the radiator so the solder flows into and over the hole. You need to also clean it up real well and use the correct type of solder and flux or all your doing is wasting your time and $$

Are the holes in tubes or in the tank(s)?

You can't just solder by dripping melted solder on the holes.

It takes some experience to heat the damaged area up carefully to melt the solder without overheating/damaging/melting the solder in adjacent areas.

And the area has to be CLEAN.

If damage is to tubes, I carefully peel back a bit of the fins around the damage, then CLEAN the area with a little wire brush in a Dremel 'til it's bright brass, then apply tinning flux and heat the area with a large electric soldering gun or a "soldering copper" 'til the solder flows in place.

Yeah I'm fairly new at this, I got the tractor from my grandfather and am trying to fix it, so I just tried the dripping. As far as where the holes are, I only know it's behind the grilles (is that the right word?) in the radiator; I'd send a picture if I had one. I took it to the radiator place and they said it most likely had a lot of holes in it, so would it just be better to replace it/get a new one?
