(quoted from post at 09:41:02 11/30/16) I am looking for an engine block for a JD 60. Does anyone know where I can find one? I am in Michigan
most boneyards have them, if not i have one im in NE WI

Mine is a 1956 (late model) 60, would that block still be the same as the late model A? Someone told me that the 60's had 2 different blocks (an early model and a late model), but I am not sure. Do you know?

Only thing I can add is check them over very carefully as they seem to be prone to cracking in the upper cylinder wall area at the front. Bottoms of them are really thin too and can crack and even rust out.

It is the late A models that have 2 different styles. The really late ones they added IIRC 1 more bolt hole where it mounts to the main case and the bolt patterns differ. I'm not positive that an original really late A block would have the extra bolt holes into the bottom for mounting like a 60 uses. Match the casting number off your old block and it should be a match.

Thats just wrong Tom. The late A had 8 bolt holes where it mounted to the crankcase but no drilled and tapped holes fore mount to the frame that the 60 used

Kent you need to look up the part numbers. The block is AA5052 and my Master Parts Index lists that number for a 60 and A,AR. I also know this will work because I did it as well. I bought a 60 with a cracked block(not known at the time). Dad had a late A he traded in as a parts tractor and we pulled the block and it went right in. Tom

Many A & 60 blocks are cracked because some Bubba over torqued the nuts on the studs attempting to stop head gasket seepage.

The part # you list is the right one for an A_AR and 60s but that number came out with 60 tractor and will work on any of these models it is the replacement block for A and Ars but did not come in the late A the one you got in the parts A must have been installed as replacement after the 60 came out. Deere did this ofen as it cut down on parts stock

That could be right. I just know that we changed everything over with no problems. It has been 30 years but I still remember changing it. So any 60 block will work in a late A but an original A block will not fit a 60? I am always learning and learn alot on this site. Tom
