Lazy JD 2130

Just brought home a 1974 2130 with 8000 hours on it. It is lazy and my dad swears it sounds like its has a bit of a miss. Where would be the best place to start diagnosing the problem? Have changed all oil and filters, including fuel and air.

Change the fuel filter and put it on a dyno to find out if it really is low on power. Anybody replaced both air filters yet ?
use a chemistry test strip in the radiator to verify the corrosion inhibitor is still active . Otherwise you will be purchasing new sleeves. Also drain the transmission, clean the screen, replace the filter after inspecting the old filter for debris , flush and fill with hygard.
Install a front pump destroker and an engine coolant heater for winter starting. If you catch any fool using ether , give them a good swift kick in the hind parts .

What does corrosion inhibitor have to do with a miss? He needs to check injection pump timing and then maybe pull injecters and have them checked. Might not hurt to pull valve cover and check valve adjustment as well. If all checks out good and the motor is not one that is wore out the next step is to pull the injection pump for testing. Your test strip idea is ok to check but totally meaningless if the last owner put new antifreeze in before selling. Tom

I could put (and have seen) new coolant in a trashed engine and the miracle test strips would pass. They only indicate the condition of the coolant, NOT the sleeves.
Back to your issue. Does it have a loader on it? If an aftermarket loader and valve are installed the incorrect (open center) valve will cause the main hydraulic pump to flow all the time, loading the engine.
Another possible problem is a failed fuel transfer pump. This can be checked by changing out the fuel filter and air bleeding the new one. If you are unable to fill the new filter with the tansfer pump it is time to replace it as it is unable to deliver enough fuel to the injection pump.

If the antifreeze is low on inhibitor the miss could be something corroded through such as a head gasket, sleeve or block o'ring groove .
Transmission condition is important too. There may have to be a choice made to either repair, trade or drive it until it drops.
I wonder where in Canada the tractor is located ?
