630 gear noise

Working on a 630 with a gear noise under load. Removed 1st reduction cover, sliding gear shaft and countershaft. Didnt see any bearings out or loose. The noise seems to be coming from the 1st reduction gear cover, but the bushing and outer bearing seem in good shape. We bought used belt pulley gear and 1st reduction gear, same noise. When going up hill it just screams, but coasting down hill quiet. We put the tractor on jack stands and ran it, applying the brakes to simulate a load, same loudness in each gear, but different noise or pitch. Reverse is quiet, could it be the countershaft pinion? Thanks

the heel and crown are worn flat and teeth then just grind instead of rolling. Read about flat driven gears and you"ll see what I"m explaining.

Originally the coutershaft had about .030 end play. I removed two shims and set the end play to .005. I could not move the diff at all, it seemed tight. All the bearings that could be removed and examined during the countershaft removal looked in good used shape. I guess we where more concerned in find a bad bearing then looking at the gears. Thanks for the advise. Will take it all back apart again, will post back.
