Road gear for Unstyled B

(quoted from post at 07:34:59 11/24/16) Call Marlin Smith Panama Iowa he has them

Carlyle, tell me more about Martin Smith. Does he have a good supply of parts? I have a 35 A I would like to put an overdrive on, and an F20 too.

Marilyn and I are going to Council bluffs in a week and I could go right through Panama on the way to CB without loosing miles.

Not sure how fast my 1935 JD-B will go but if you put it in 2nd high you can not ride on it for more then say 50 feet or your likely to be bouncing off the seat in a heart beat but it is on steel wheels and I have only had it in 2nd high one time in all the years I have had it

I had a 37 A with one in it,,it would go 22MPH in high gear,, and yes that was more than fast enough...when it went down the road it seemed like every time it "Putted" the wheels would make 5 revolutions...mine was a Behlem..When I got that A the drive was broken,, there was a key way stripped out, I had a new shaft made for it,,I'm thinking this was a weak spot in them,, so kinda look that over when you buying one..Just a loose thought...

To answer your question , Both transmission shafts and all the gears have to removed as well as the flywheel and replaced with the longer transmission shafts from the road gear . You use your old transmission gears. There is a spacer that has to be installed behind the flywheel. When most people find out whats involve they usaully back away. Good luck, Tom

Thanks Carlyle. Back in the 60's dad had a loader on the 51 A. When cattle yard clean out came in August we used two small Deere spreaders, one pulled with the 630 and the other was behind the 35 A. Dad put my sis on the 630 and me on the A because I was a boy and boys like speed and the A only went 6.5 MPH so he didn't have to worry about me getting carried away with the speed. Putting my toe in the governor helped a little but very little. If it would have had overdrive I probably would have killed myself.

Why? Because! The only reason I can come up with is 'just because'. I wanna relive my youth I guess. The four and a half mile drive to the threshing show will go faster, if I make it there alive. LOL I run two bangers a lot, always have so the music isn't quite as sweet to me as it is to some folks, though I still like the beat.

I know all about the "Just because" thing!

My suggestion is -Start earlier! Enjoy the ride!

(quoted from post at 02:23:15 11/27/16) My ONLY question is "WHY?????" It runs fast enough -just enjoy the ride and LISTEN to that exhaust!

Pretty much all the tractor rides around here have a 10mph minimum.

Then my only other suggestion would be to put a bigger (Taller) set of tires and wheels on the rear. That would get you going faster than with stock. Otherwise -volunteer to take the lead!!!!

On some of the tractor rides I;ve been on -the 10 mph was desired but over the course of say 5 miles between stops it did not make that much difference time wise -coming in 5 min after everyone was not a problem with me! Just meant that when I stepped up to the food table -there was not a line to wait in! HEHEHE!!!
